Life

From the third grade, Korolev attended a Leningrad chess section, in which he was trained under the direction of Andrei Batuev. With the Leningrad selection ( Boris Spassky , Vyacheslav Osnos and other players) he was second in the youth championship of the Soviet Union in 1953 . After finishing school, he took up studies at the Military-Mechanical Institute ( Wojenmech ), where he later completed an apprenticeship . In the meantime he was employed as an engineer at the Klimow works . Korolyov took part in the Leningrad City Championship several times, with his best result being sixth place in 1962. After all, in these tournaments he defeated some renowned opponents such as Mark Taimanow and Viktor Korchnoi . Since 1964 he held the title of Sports Champion of the USSR . Since he had too little time for close-up chess due to his job, he concentrated on correspondence chess.

At the Mirotworski Memorial (1981–1985) and Kossenkow Memorial (1997–2002) he divided the 2nd – 3rd Place each with Reinhardas Barstatis and Wassili Malinin. Especially as a first-class team player, he drew attention to himself in the Soviet Union as well as internationally. At the IV and V Soviet team championships he reached second and first place with the selection of his hometown. In both tournaments he showed the best result on his board with 12 points out of 12 and 11 out of 12. With the USSR team he triumphed at the I and II European Championships, which were held in 1978-1983 and 1983-1988. With 8 points out of 8 and 8.5 out of 9, he achieved the best result ever. In 1987, on the initiative of Vladimir Sagorovsky, Korolev was invited to the Soviet selection again. Together with Sagorowski, Tõnu Õim , Gennadi Nessis and other players, he took part in the Xth Correspondence Chess Olympiad and was declared the winner in 1995. In the same year he was awarded the title of Correspondence Chess Grandmaster at the ICCF Congress in Gjøvik .
