Acid attack

On January 17, 2013, Filin was seriously injured in an acid attack in front of his home by an unknown masked man with a hood; he suffered burns to his head, neck and eyes. Before the attack, threats had been constant since Filin was given the influential post of director of the Bolshoi Ballet. His website was hacked and insulted, and his car tires were stabbed. After the attack, Filin said he was "absolutely certain" who was behind the attack, but did not publicly name any names. He was treated in Moscow; on February 4, 2013 he was brought to Aachen for rehab . On March 6, 2013, Moscow police announced that three suspects were arrested and confessed to the acid attack on Filin. The alleged client is said to be the Bolshoi solo dancer Pavel Dmitritschenko . An arrest warrant was issued against him and two other men because there was a risk of escape. According to the Interior Ministry, Dmitritschenko is said to have paid the assassin 50,000 rubles (around 1,250 euros). On December 3, 2013, Dmitritschenko was sentenced to 6 years in prison by a Moscow court. The latter stated in court that he had felt neglected by Filin in assigning major roles. Even when the two were still dancers, both often played rival roles. The real perpetrator, Yuri Saruzki, was sentenced to 10 years in prison and the driver, Andrei Lipatov, has been imprisoned for 4 years. The three perpetrators also have to pay Filin compensation for pain and suffering of 3.5 million rubles (approx. 78,000 euros). Filin suffered severe burns to his face in the assassination attempt and partially lost his eyesight. The events are the subject of the documentary Bolshoi Babylon , which premiered on September 14, 2015 at the Toronto International Film Festival and was also released in Germany.
