Sergei Vasilyevich Saltykov
Sergei Wassiljewitsch Saltykow ( Russian Сергей Васильевич Салтыков , scientific transliteration Sergej Vasil'evič Saltykov ; * 1726 ; † 1765 ) was a Russian diplomat and nobleman from the house of Saltykow . He is best known as one of the lovers of the future Tsarina Catherine II of Russia and possibly the father of Tsar Paul I.
His father was Vasily Fyodorowitsch Saltykow (1675-1751). By marrying a lady-in-waiting, he came to the imperial court in Saint Petersburg at the age of 26 . The Grand Duchess Catherine, married to the heir to the throne Peter Fyodorowitsch , got involved in an affair with the good-looking chamberlain, Count Sergei Saltykov.
On October 1, 1754, Katharina gave birth to her son Paul. The tsarina recognized the child as legitimate, but had Saltykov removed from the court. She sent him as a special envoy to the King of Sweden to announce the birth of the future heir to the throne. He later served as the Russian envoy in Hamburg , Paris and Dresden .
