Sergei Machonin

Sergej Machonin (born December 29, 1918 in Moscow , † November 24, 1995 in Prague ) was a Czechoslovakian theater critic, literary critic, publicist and editor, dramaturge and translator.

Life

From 1930 Sergej Machonin attended the Russian grammar school in Moravská Třebová and from 1931 the grammar school in Prostějov . In 1938 he completed his studies in Czech and German at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague. Because he took part in student events in November 1939, he was imprisoned in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp until 1942 . After his return he worked as a clerk and editor. After the war, he studied comparative literature at Charles University in 1951 and did his doctorate on contemporary Soviet literature. In addition, from 1945 to 1947 he was editor of the then party-affiliated publishing house Mladá Fronta and secretary of the department for cultural relations at the Ministry of Information. 1948–1949 he worked as a dramaturge in the Czechoslovak state film, 1950–1953 as a dramaturge at the Realistic Theater in Prague. In the years 1954–1969 he was editor of Literární noviny and at the same time worked in the film studios Barrandov as a screenwriter (1966–1969). Since the 1950s he has consistently devoted himself to theater criticism.

Sergei Machonin developed from a proponent of orthodox Marxism to a proponent of its reform to a sharp critic of the dogmatism of the normalization program after 1968. During this time he finally left his initial sympathies for socialist realism behind and was in the opposition and in the samizdat after 1969 and its dissemination. He fell out of favor, from 1970 to 1973 he worked as a night watchman and then retired. He was one of the first to sign the declaration of Charter 77 from 1977. It was not until 1990 that he was able to return to the editorial team of the Literární noviny.

In samizdat, Sergej Machonin used the pseudonym Jindřich Ješ and the abbreviations sm, Sm, SM, SM, sin, sj, AB, s, km, m.
