Sergei Pawlowitsch Karpow ( Russian Сергей Павлович Карпов ; born January 1, 1948 in Stavropol ) is a Russian historian specializing in Medieval and Byzantine studies .

biography

Karpov studied in Moscow, where he graduated from Lomonosov University (MGU) in 1971 with a degree in history. In 1974 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the Trapezunt Empire . 1977-78 he continued his studies with the help of a research grant at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice .

In addition, he worked from 1974 as an assistant, later as a lecturer at the MGU; Since 1989 he has been professor of Byzantine history there, since 1995 dean of the Faculty of History and helped to set up the Center for Black Sea Research under his direction.

Karpow published essays in various languages ​​as well as some monographs on the history of the Black Sea in the Middle Ages , most of which are based on sources from Northern Italian archives. He is considered to be one of the key experts in this field, as evidenced by the translation of some of his publications into Western European languages.
