Serial is a podcast produced by Chicago Public Radio in the United States . All episodes of a season deal with the various aspects of an unsolved criminal case. The presenter is Sarah Koenig , the production team is made up of employees from the radio show This American Life , whose spin-off Serial can be viewed. Two seasons had been released by the end of March 2016, and a third season was announced for spring 2018.

Season one, the 12 episodes of which were released from October to December 2014, deals with the murder of student Hae Min Lee at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore , Maryland in January 1999, for which her classmate Adnan Syed was convicted as a perpetrator. The consequences raise doubts about the legality of the judgment. Also triggered by the podcast, which was accessed over 80 million times by the end of 2016, the case was reopened in 2016.

The 11 episodes of the second season were made available from December 2015 to March 2016 and viewed 50 million times. The season deals with the case of the US soldier Bowe Bergdahl , who fell into the hands of the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2009 and who, after his liberation in 2014, faces a military tribunal for desertion.

In the period from September to November 2018, the nine episodes of the third season were published weekly. In contrast to the first two seasons, not a single case is portrayed, but rather one act per episode that was tried at the Cleveland Criminal Court (Ohio) .

The producers of the podcast are Sarah Koenig, Julie Snyder, Dana Chiwis and Emily Condon. Serial received the Peabody Award for its first season in 2015 .

In July 2020, The New York Times announced the purchase of the podcast's production company, Serial Productions, while also working closely with This American Life.
