The Sermitsiaq is a 1210  m high mountain in the southwest of Greenland near the capital Nuuk . The Greenlandic name Sermitsiaq means "medium-sized ice cover". Due to its distinctive shape, it is considered a symbol of the city and is also depicted in its coat of arms. The Sermitsiaq newspaper , one of two Greenland-wide newspapers, is named after the mountain.

location

The Sermitsiaq is located about 15 kilometers northeast of Nuuk on the approximately 15 kilometers long and 7 kilometers wide U-shaped Sermitsiaq island in the Nuuk Fjord ( Nuup Kangerlua , Danish Godthåbs Fjord ). The mountain takes up most of the area of the island. While the south side of the Sermitsiaq is characterized by steep rock walls, under which a small lake lies, the north side of the mountain is heavily glaciated.

The summit area is characterized by a sharp west-east facing ridge, in the course of which three summit points rise. The main summit, the westernmost of these elevations, is marked with a cairn . To the west, the ridge continues over the distinctive saddle, which gave the mountain its name, to a distinctive rocky pre-summit, where it plunges steeply into the sea.

At the northern tip of the island, a striking waterfall falls from the Sermitsiaq into the sea, which is a destination for tourist excursions from Nuuk.

Ascent

The Sermitsiaq is climbed from the bay in the south of the island over the ridge, which extends from the main over the secondary peaks in an easterly to north-easterly direction down to the center of the island. There are no paths, the ascent requires easy climbing , in poor conditions ice climbing equipment may also be necessary.
