The Seungjeongwon Ilgi ( Korean 승정원 일기 ) is a collection of diaries of the royal secretariat of the Joseon Dynasty ( 조선 왕조 ) (1392-1910) in Korea . The collection covers the period from the 17th century to the 20th century.
The work
The diaries of the royal secretariat contain large amounts of authentic and historical data as well as records of state secrets of the time. Since the records reach into the 20th century, they give u. a. Shedding light on how the then closed kingdom slowly opened up to Western influences. The works also contain observations by the royal secretaries and his scribes in relation to the respective kings and give detailed insights into royal life. Some of the works were damaged or destroyed during the wars and by fire, but could then be restored or renewed.
The records of the Seungjeongwon Ilgi as a comprehensive collection contain a total of 3243 diaries, of which 3045 books were called Seungjeongwon Ilgi , 4 copies were given the title Seungseonwon Ilgi , 5 books were called Gungnaebu Ilgi , 33 works are called Gyujanggak Ilgi and 156 diaries are called Gyujanggak Ilgi Biseogam Ilgi are known. The entire collection is said to contain a total of 242.5 million Chinese characters , which shows the extent of the collection. In 1994 around 40 experts from the Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics began translating the diaries into Korean as part of a challenging project . But the status after 23 years of work was that you could only edit and translate 20% of the diaries. How long the project will last, nobody can predict yet.
The collection is kept in the Gyujanggak Library ( 규장각 ) at Seoul National University and is not open to the public. But 141 copies were made by the National History Compilation Committee between 1961 and 1977 and made available to the public for inspection.
World document heritage
Before the collection of the diaries of the Royal Secretariat was declared a World Document Heritage by UNESCO in 2001 and thus included in the Memory of the World Register , the Korean government registered the collection as a national cultural asset under registration number 303 on April 9, 1999.
