Two volumes of the Nanjung Ilgi

The Nanjung Ilgi ( Korean : 난중 일기 ) are handwritten diary entries of the Korean admiral Yi Sun-sin ( 이순신 ) (1545–1598), which he made during his operations in the Imjin War ( 임진 왜란 ) against the Japanese invaders from 1592 to 1598 . The records are unique in the world in that they describe the admiral's personal views, his feelings, weather observations, topographies of the battlefield and the course of the battles, as well as the lives of ordinary people. Some poems that people recited in those days can also be found in the books.

Admiral Yi Sun-sin

Yi Sun-sin lived during the Joseon Dynasty ( 조선 왕조 ) (1392-1910), entered military service in 1580 and showed special military qualities in some battles against the invading Manchurians from the north . This led to King Seonjo ( 선조 ) (1552-1608) sending him to the province of Jeolla to defend the country at sea . Yi Sun-sin began building the Geobukseon ships ( 거북선 ) there and defeated the Japanese naval force in several sea battles.
