Sevgi Soysal (born September 30, 1936 in Istanbul , † 1976 ibid) was a Turkish writer .

Life

Sevgi Soysal was born on September 30, 1936 as the third of six children of the architect Mithat Yenen and his wife Anneliese Rupp from Germany , who later took the Turkish name Aliye. She studied classical philology in Ankara and theater studies in Göttingen .

In 1956 she married the poet and translator Özdemir Nutku . She followed her husband to Germany, where she attended lectures on archeology and theater at the University of Göttingen. There she became pregnant and returned home. In 1958 she gave birth to a son named Korkut.

From 1962 Soysal published short stories and novels in which the efforts of young women in Turkey for emancipation is a recurring theme; Germany too is a recurring motif in her work. From 1965 Soysal also began working for the Turkish radio. She was imprisoned at the time of the military dictatorship in 1971. She was accused of belonging to a left-wing organization. While incarcerated in the Mamak Military Prison, she met Mümtaz Soysal , a constitutional law professor who was also detained for communist propaganda. The two married in prison. After her release, she gave birth to their daughters Defne (1973) and Funda (1975). Soysal was arrested again for political reasons, then spent eight months in prison and another two and a half months in exile in Adana.

Sevgi Soysal developed breast cancer and lost one of her breasts in late 1975. She underwent another breast operation in September 1976 and went to London with her husband for medical treatment. After returning from London, Soysal died in Istanbul in 1976 at the age of forty. She was laid to rest in the Zincirlikuyu cemetery in Istanbul.

Soysal's stories have been partially translated into German, for example Aunt Rosa (1982). In 1992, a literary study of Soysal's work in German by Priska Furrer was published (see section Works ).
