Seyfo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Seyfo (plural: Seyfolu ) is a title in the Gambian local government , it can best be compared with a district president or a district head. The term “chief” is also very common in the Anglophone Gambia .

The Seyfo's insignia includes the flag, stamp and staff.

Historical

Traditionally, a Seyfo was the supreme chief and corresponded to the historical Mansa , some of the Seyfo still come from these regent families today.

Contemporary

Today the appointment is in the Gambian constitution ; Chapter V Part 6: “Seyfolu and Alkalolu” addressed. A Seyfo leads the district authority, which is subordinate to the Area Council. The Alkalolu of the villages assist the Seyfo in an advisory capacity. In the House of Representatives , the Gambian parliament until the constitutional amendment in 1994, the Seyfolu had five seats. They were elected in a meeting of all heads of state.

A constitutional amendment in 2001 overturned the original Seyfolu election and made them appointed leaders of the president rather than elected incumbents.
