Alkalo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An alkalo (plural: alkalolu ) is a title in the Gambian local government . He can best be compared to a mayor or, even better, to a village chief or mayor . There are also the spellings Alikalo and Alkaaloo (plural: Alkaaloolu ).

Traditionally, the village chief was an alkalo who was in charge of the village. Today the appointment is also in the Gambian Constitution ; Chapter V Part 6: “Seyfolu and Alkalolu” addressed. An alkalo is subordinate to the Seyfo , who is in charge at the district level. The village elders , who are elected by the village, provide advice to the alkalo . Resolutions, however, must be passed unanimously by the alkalo and the village elders. 1810 people are appointed as Alkalolu in Gambia (as of 2017).

The mayors of the capital Banjul and the municipality Kanifing Municipal (with Serekunda ) are mayors of an independent municipality, but are called "Mayor" or "Lord Mayor" as in other English-speaking countries.
