Shōji Nishio

Shōji Nishio ( Japanese 西 尾 昭 二 , Nishio Shōji ; * December 5, 1927 in Shimokita County , Aomori Prefecture ; † March 15, 2005 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese Aikidō teacher.

Martial arts

Shōji Nishio devoted himself to martial arts throughout his life. At the age of 15 he turned to judo in 1942 and from 1950 to karate (Shizen Ryū). In the early 1950s Nishio came into contact with Aikidō and in 1952 became a student of Ueshiba Morihei and finally Shihan of Aikikai . He also learned from 1955 to Iaidō and Jōdō (Shindo Muso-ryū). Since 1955 he taught Aikido first in Japan, later also in Europe z. B. in Denmark and Germany. He had the 8th Dan Aikidō (awarded 1976), the 8th Dan Iaidō, the 7th Dan Karate and the 6th Dan Judo and received awards for his commitment to the spread of Aikido.

Aikidō style

From his experience in other martial arts he developed the Aikidō style Nishio-Ryū (also Aikido Toho Iai ), which contains elements primarily of Iaido (also of karate) and emphasizes the Irimi principle of Aikido by means of early Atemi techniques.
