The Shag River is a river in the region Otago on the South Island of New Zealand . It rises from the Kakanui Mountains and flows for 50 km in a southeast direction before flowing into the Pacific at Palmerston . The Dunback branch line of the Main South Line was operated from the 1880s to 1989 and largely follows the course of the river from its junction from the Main South Line in Palmerston to the end point in Dunback .
