The tunnel was built from 2006 to 2012 by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), which is entrusted with the expansion of the entire route, for 51.7 million US dollars . It is the only road connection between the capital and the Fergana Valley . The previous road over the Schahriston Pass was not passable in winter.
