Tarves began his career in 1977 with the then top division club EHC Essen .

For the 1982/83 Oberliga season he moved to ESG Kassel , where he had 102 goals and 54 assists in 36 games in his first season and was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga with Kassel. Because of these remarkable statistics, his fans from Kassel gave him the nickname Shane "The Train" .

In the ten years that he spent at Kassel up to the end of his career, Tarves helped ESG Kassel in its economic crisis and witnessed the renaming of the club to EC Kassel . Due to financial deficits, he played the games with the club for two years in the league again from 1988 until the ice hockey club returned to the 2nd Bundesliga in 1990. In 1992 Tarves ended his career at the age of 38.

Shane Tarves leads the team's goal, assists and game statistics. His shirt number # 3, which he wore in Kassel, is no longer given to other players and hangs under the stadium roof of the Kassel ice rink .

In 2010 Tarves returned to the ice. From October 9th he will play in the Hessenliga with the 1b team of the ice hockey youth Kassel.
