The Shanghai Museum ( Chinese 上海 博物館 / 上海 博物馆 , Pinyin Shànghǎi Bówùguǎn ; English Shanghai Museum ) is one of the cultural centers of the city of Shanghai in China .
In 2017 the museum had 2,087,597 visitors, making it one of the most visited art museums in the world.
history
The forerunner was the Shanghai Museum of the Royal Asiatic Society , which had been located in their Art Deco building near the Bund since 1932 . The museum was closed in 1952 and the holdings were divided between three museums in Shanghai, including the new Shanghai Museum. Today's museum was founded in 1952 on Nanjing West Street and was initially located in the former horse racing club. It was relocated to Henan South Street in 1959. In 1992 it was decided to build a new building for the museum on the People's Square. Construction began in 1993, the building designed by architect Xing Tonghe was completed in 1996.
The museum now has a total of 39,200 square meters of exhibition space. Its outer shape with a round upper floor on a square base reflects the ancient Chinese world view of the round sky over a square earth. The four semicircular attachments on the roof are reminiscent of the handles of an antique three-legged cult vessel of the Ding type .
Stocks
Some of the holdings came from the old Shanghai Museum of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1952 . The museum has ten galleries that offer a comprehensive overview of Chinese art and culture. It holds around 140,000 artifacts.
