Shantungosaurus is a genus of hadrosaurs (Hadrosauridae) from the late Upper Cretaceous ( Maastrichtian ). The first fossil remains of the genus, including tibia bones, were found in 1964. Excavations were later carried out in 1965, 1966 and 1968. The fossils were recovered from a gray-green sandstone conglomerate.

Skeleton reconstruction in the Beijing Natural History Museum

All fossils were excavated in a single quarry but are not preserved in anatomical context. In total, the fossil remains of at least five specimens were found, including partially preserved skulls and parts of the remaining skeleton. 1993 Shantungosaurus of Hu Chengzhi described . The only species described is Shantungosaurus giganteus .

In the paleontological hall of the Natural History Museum in Beijing , a skeleton was set up that was 14.7 meters long. Shantungosaurus was next to the North American Edmontosaurus , to which it is very similar, and Lambeosaurus the largest hadrosaur and also the largest ornithopod .

The total skull is 1.63 meters long and low, but the muzzle region is high and the posterior (posterior) skull region is wide.
