Shed roof

A shed roof (German: Scheddach ) or sawtooth roof is a roof shape that is mainly designed for buildings with large areas such as factory buildings. Several small monopitch or gable roof -like roof structures are lined up one behind the other.

A building with shed roof is also called Shedhalle , Shedgebäude or Shedbau referred. The word origin should be in the English term shed for shed or shed. Nevertheless, in English this roof form is called saw-tooth roof called (literally "Sägezahndach"), while shed roof a simple pitch roof says.

The shed roofs appeared in factory buildings in England in the mid-19th century. Their advantage is that illumination is made possible by the natural incidence of light from the north without glare and without the formation of shadows . An additional positive effect of orienting the shed roofs to the north is the minimization of unwanted heat; the direct sunlight is relatively low.

The individual roof structures are referred to as riders on a shed roof . The rider consists of a sloping roof surface and a steeper or vertical window surface that allows light to enter. This has the advantage that a building requires fewer supports for the roof structure in order to secure the structure, which is also reflected in the construction costs.

The steep or vertical side of the roof turret is made translucent so that the even and optimized lighting of large and largest covered areas can be achieved. In buildings in which glare plays a minor role, shed roofs can also be oriented in directions other than north. If there is double-sided lighting via additional skylights in shed roofs, the illuminance increases in the center of the room and is optimized on the walls.

In the post-war period, the lighting was further improved through the use of fluorescent tubes .

In the case of conventional shed roofs, under the influence of weather and gravity, the roofing and sealing can start to leak after a few years due to the relatively large angle of inclination, especially when using roofing felt. The problem occurs particularly in the edge areas of the seal. Different materials, ventilation and drains meet there. Possible solutions to the problem are the reduction of the effects of the weather, patented in 1991, by means of profile plates that are attached with metal profiles, or sealing with liquid plastics.

Thermal insulation

In the past, thermal insulation measures were often neglected in the south-facing riding areas. Today there are opportunities for energetic optimization.
