Sheep Island ( Irish Oileán na gCaora [ch] , German " Sheep Island " ) is an uninhabited island, 0.5 km off the coast of Northern Ireland near Ballintoy , in County Antrim . It covers an area of 3.5 hectares and is known for its steep cliffs (one of which is almost vertical and more than 20 m high) and rocky coasts. The top of the island is arched and covered with earth.
The island is designated as a Special Protection Area and an Area of Special Scientific Interest. This is because it has a population of cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) that is more than 5% of the total in Ireland . The island also has the type cormorants (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) and seabirds of species fulmar , kittiwake , herring gull , Cepphus (alkene) and black guillemots style on (Cepphus grylle).
Nearby are the islands of Carrick-a-Rede and Rathlin Island .
