Sheila Kitzinger

Sheila Helena Elizabeth Kitzinger MBE (born March 29, 1929 in Taunton , Somerset , † April 12, 2015 in Oxfordshire ) was a British social anthropologist specializing in pregnancy, childbirth and the upbringing of babies and toddlers. She was an advocate of natural childbirth and the author of numerous books on childbirth and pregnancy . She was a lecturer in midwifery but had not completed any training as a midwife . She advocated that women get the information to be able to decide for themselves about the type and place of their birth.

She was an honorary professor at Thames Valley University and taught the master's degree in midwifery at the Wolfson School of Health Sciences . She has also led workshops on the social anthropology of childbirth and breastfeeding .

Sheila Kitzinger firmly believed that every woman without risk factors should have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of a home birth . She has been a dedicated author and her books cover women's experience with prenatal care, planned births, induction , epidural , perineal cuts , hospital care during childbirth, and the experience of babies during childbirth and the possible subsequent post-traumatic stress disorder in childhood .
