Shell Pernis is a Dutch refinery in Pernis , a district of Rotterdam . It is the largest refinery in Europe.

history

The refinery was built in 1902 to process oil from Sumatra . In 1969 the refinery was at times the world's largest with a capacity of 25 million tons of crude oil a year. In the following years, the refinery was optimized for the output of chemical raw materials in order to supply the new Shell chemical site in Moerdijk . In 1989 the Hycon, a hydrocracker for vacuum residues, was put into operation. After a modernization program in 1997 called PER + , various chemical plants were sold by Shell in 2000. A refinery power plant with combined heat and power was installed on the plant . The power plant has an output of 82 MW (electrical).
