Shennong ( Chinese  神農  /  神农 , Pinyin Shénnóng , Kor. 신농 , Sinnong , viet. Thần Nông ), formally also called Venerable Shennong or Master Shennong ( 神農氏  /  神农氏 , Shénnóng Shi ), is also known as the legendary Great Emperor Shennong ( 神農 大帝  /  神农 大帝 , Shénnóng Dàdì ) or Yan Kaiser ( 炎帝 , yándì , Kor. 염제 , Yeomje , viet. Viêm Đế ), who is considered a cultural hero in Chinese mythology . According to tradition, he lived about 5000 years ago and taught people to farm and examined the plants for their medicinal properties. The discovery of tea is also attributed to him. The literal translation of Shennong is "Divine Farmer", "King of the Peasant".

He is said to have compiled the results of his medicinal plant studies in a three-part book volume on medicinal plants and herbs, the "Classics of Medicinal Herbs According to Shennong" ( 神農 本草 經  /  神农 本草 经 , Shénnóng Běncǎojīng  - "Classical Work of Roots and Herbs According to Shennong"). The work, which covers 365 herbs and substances, was not compiled until the end of the Western Han Dynasty .

As the supposed brother of the Yellow Emperor , he is regarded as one of the mythical patriarchs of the Chinese. The Han Chinese considered both their ancestors. He was also venerated as an ancestor in Vietnam . In Chinese mythology, he is considered one of the three sublime ( 三皇 , Sān Huáng ) who are considered the founders of the culture. Therefore, he was worshiped as a god for his actions for the benefit of mankind.

Shennong is said to have collaborated with Fu Xi and Huáng Dì in the invention of the musical instrument Guqin .

With the spread of Chinese medicine in the neighboring countries, a Shennong cult arose among doctors, drug dealers, etc.

After Shennong the plant genus is Schinnongia cabinet from the family of Iridaceae named (Iridaceae).
