The 60-kilometer Shennong River ( Chinese  神农溪 , Pinyin Shennong Xī ), also Yandu He called (沿渡河), rises in the forest Shennongjia and ends at the village Xirangkou (西瀼口村), greater community Guanduhe (官渡河镇) , in Badong County (巴东 县) of Enshi Autonomous District of Tujia and Miao in China 's Hubei Province in the Yangtze River .

Due to the very shallow waters in some parts of the river, the traditional boats are pulled on ropes in the old tradition. The Tujia people , a Chinese minority, live on Shennong .

In the Longxia Gorge , through which the Shennong winds, there are many caves high above the water with coffins carved from tree trunks. 2000 years ago the Ba people buried their dead there, as close as possible to heaven. To this day it is not clear how the people brought the large tree trunks there.

Due to the damming of the Yangtze in the course of the Three Gorges Dam , the water level of the river has risen considerably, which is why the Tujia settlements have been relocated to higher areas. This means that the tradition of towing in higher areas of the river , which has also been relevant to tourism in recent years, is no longer applicable .
