Shibuya-kei

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shibuya-kei ( Japanese 渋 谷 系 , dt. About: "Shibuya style") is a sub-genre of J-Pop and comes from the Shibuya district in Tokyo . It can best be described as a mix of jazz, pop, and electro-pop.

The term was originally used to describe Flipper's Guitar and Pizzicato Five . Both bands are heavily influenced by French yéyé music. Other influences are lounge music and bossa nova . As the genre became more popular in the late 1990s, other bands such as Puffy began to be associated with it.

Some artists refuse to use the name Shibuya-kei . The genre was supported by local companies such as HMV Shibuya, which sold Shibuya-kei CDs in the Japanese traditional music department.

The fact that the CD covers are in the style of the 1960s and 1970s also contributed to the success of the scene.
