ShiftN is free graphics software for the automatic correction of falling lines and for the automatic rotation of photos. It comes from Marcus Hebel. The name of the software is based on the term " shift " for the use of a shift lens, for example in architectural photography.

functionality

The software simulates the use of a so-called shift lens . ShiftN first determines edges and lines in the photo, whereby only those are taken into account that do not deviate too much from the vertical edges of the image. Using these lines, the photo is distorted in perspective in such a way that vertical edges are actually displayed vertically in the image. The underlying image ( projection matrix ) shifts the main point of the image . If the automatic system shows unnatural results due to incorrectly selected lines, it is possible to influence the selection of the reference lines. The result of the automatic calculation can be changed later. In addition, simple barrel-shaped or pincushion-shaped distortions of the lens can be compensated for manually , but not complex wave-shaped distortions.

ShiftN allows the pre-setting of some parameters, such as the degree of equalization and sharpening . ShiftN can only be used to a limited extent for editing images that have already been cropped; it works best with the complete file. When saving the result, you can choose whether the entire file, including the empty areas created by the distortion, should be saved, or whether the program should automatically determine the largest possible area without borders. A frame can also be drawn out manually in order to save only a section.

ShiftN reads the graphic formats JPG , BMP and TIFF (8 and 16 bit color depth) and can also save in these formats. A disadvantage of the program is that it only offers Exif support for the JPG format, but does not transfer this information to the resulting image in the case of TIFF images. In addition to interactive processing, batch operation and calling with command line parameters is also possible, which means that ShiftN can also be integrated into other software relatively easily.

distribution

ShiftN is also used internationally; the user guidance can be set to German, English, French or Spanish.

In the German market, the software has been included with almost 30 trade and consumer magazines from the field of digital photography and PC since 2006, mostly coupled with a short review. In 2007, the Swiss Tages-Anzeiger ranked ShiftN among the best free tools for photographers alongside Adobe, Picasa, Photoshop Starter Edition, Helicon Filter and PhotoFiltre .
