Shimizu Toshi ( Japanese 清水 登 之 ; born January 1, 1887 in Tochigi Prefecture ; died December 7, 1945 ) was a Japanese painter of the Yōga direction during the Shōwa period .

life and work

Shimizu Toshi originally wanted to become a professional soldier, but did not pass the aptitude test. He then decided to become a painter and traveled to the USA in 1907. There he had to fight his way through life for five years before he could begin his training at an institute in Seattle. After another five years he came to New York, where he joined the Art Students League and was able to establish contacts with Kuniyoshi Yasuo and Ishigaki Eitarō . His teacher was John Sloan , whose style of depicting the American scene influenced him greatly. So he presented the neighborhoods of New York and their residents in a humorous and warm-hearted way.

In 1924 Shimizu traveled to France and won prizes at the Salon d'Automne that same year and the following year . He won a prize from the Société des Artistes Indépendants with the painting “Outskirts of Toledo (soldiers and monks)” . - After spending three years in Europe, he returned to Japan in 1927 and became a founding member of the “Society of Independent Art” (独立 美術 協会, Dokuritsu bijutsu kyōkai) and exhibited there regularly. - During the Pacific War he painted a series of war pictures, apparently based on photographic originals.
