Ishigaki Eitarō ( Japanese 石 垣 栄 太郎 ; born December 1, 1893 in Taiji , Wakayama Prefecture ; died January 23, 1958 ) was a Japanese "western style" painter during the Taishō and Shōwa periods .

life and work

Ishigaki was born in Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture. His father, who emigrated to America in 1901, brought him to live with him in 1909. Eitarō decided to become a painter and from 1912 attended the State Art School of California. In 1915 he went to New York to work and studied at the Art Student League under John Sloan . In 1918 he worked as a typesetter for the Japanese weekly New York Shimbō . During this time he met the leading Japanese socialist Katayama Sen and joined his study society on socialism. In 1919 he became co-editor of the proletarian magazine Kyōzon ( 共存 ).

In 1929 Ishigaki met the Mexican painters José C. Orozco and Rufino Tamayo . In 1935 he designed a mural for the Harlem Court , commissioned by the World Progress Administration (WPA). In 1936 he co-founded the American Artists' Congress. After the USA entered the war in 1941, as a Japanese, he was subject to controls.

During the McCarthy era , Ishigaki was arrested as a communist in 1951, but was able to leave the United States under conditions and returned to Japan. He then lived in seclusion in Mitaka . - A memorial museum ( 太 地 町 石 垣 記念 館 , Taiji-chō Ishigaki kinenkan ) was built in his honor in Taiji .
