Shining8 was founded in 1987 at a meeting of several computer geeks. The name was based on the film Shining and because eight people were present when it was founded.

For the years 1988/1989 there are more than 100 releases in the C64 Scene Database alone. Since the group also had numerous musicians who created the music for the intros and demos, numerous music compilation demos were published, especially in the years from 1990 onwards.

The group grew especially in the years from 1990 onwards and received numerous new members from all over the world. Exotica.org.uk lists over 70 known members in the years up to 1994.

In order to be able to exchange the software quickly, numerous mailboxes and BBS systems were set up from 1990 onwards . Over 20 mailboxes were put into operation worldwide.

In April 1992 the group held a big party. For this purpose, a complete discotheque was rented and all groups familiar with the scene were invited. Similar to today's demo parties , there were numerous competitions and supporting events such as B. a demo competition in which the main prize was an Amiga 500.

Between 1993 and 1994 the group was quiet. Most of the members left the group. From 1995 there was a kind of successor organization, the Shining8 THIRD GENERATION. However, the original Shining8 members had little to do with it.

Shining8 - The Movie

The documentary filmmaker Konstantin Stürz , who has published numerous films about the computer scene, made a documentary about the Shining8 group in 2002, in which former members presented their views of the time. The film was broadcast on some regional television programs and is available on youtube .
