The Shiraserenna ( Norwegian for Shiraserinne , Japanese 白 瀬 海底 谷 Shirase Katei-koku , German 'Shirase Lower Sea Valley ' ) is a 100 km long 1650 m below sea level subglacial rift in the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land . It stretches from the Shirase Glacier in a northerly direction to the Lützow-Holm-Bucht on the Prinz Harald Coast .
Japanese scientists determined its extent between 1959 and 1981. They named it in 1989 after the Japanese polar explorer Shirase Nobu (1861-1946), leader of the First Japanese Expedition (1910-1912). Scientists at the Norwegian Polar Institute translated the Japanese name into Norwegian in 1990.
