The Shiwan kiln ( Chinese  石灣 窯  /  石湾 窑 , Pinyin Shíwān yáo , English Shiwan kiln ) is a famous Ming period ceramic kiln in Shiwan 石灣  /  石湾 , Chancheng District , of Foshan in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong . It is said to date back to the Song or even the Tang dynasty.

His most famous kiln is the Old Nanfeng Kiln ( 南風 古 灶  /  南风 古 灶 , Nánfēng Gǔzào , English Nanfeng Ancient Kiln  - "Old South Wind Kiln "), which is a dragon kiln or dragon kiln ( 龍窯  /  龙窑 , lóngyáo , English Dragon kiln ) acts as a type of hanging stove .

Old Nanfeng kiln

The old Nanfeng kiln

The old Nanfeng kiln was built in the Zhengde era (1506–1521) of the Ming Dynasty . Since that time, its fire has never gone out and production has been continuous, which is rarely seen - it is the oldest dragon kiln in China. The dragon kiln is a specific type of kiln whose name derives from its uphill shape, which is similar to the tail of a dragon. In Shiwan, a ceramic kiln is called "zao" (灶, furnace), otherwise it is usually called "yao" (窯 / 窑, kiln) in Chinese. Since the opening of the kiln faces south, it was given the name "Südwind-Kilofen" ( Nanfeng literally means "Südwind" in Chinese) or Nanfeng kiln or Nanfeng Zao. The kiln is 34.4 m long, it has 29 rows of fire holes, since technical improvements were made to the kiln, it is no longer in its original condition.

The Old South Wind Kiln has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (5-516) since 2001 .
