KK Shoei ( Japanese 株式会社 SHOEI , Kabushiki-gaisha Shoei , German Shoei Co., Ltd. ) is a Japanese manufacturer of motorcycle helmets .

history

The company goes back to the Kamata Polyester ( 鎌 田 ポ リ エ ス テ ル ) founded by Eitarō Kamata ( 鎌 田 栄 太郎 ) in 1954 , which manufactured helmets primarily for the construction industry. Motorcycle helmets have been produced since 1958. On March 17, 1959, the company was founded as Shōei Kakō KK ( 昭 栄 化工 株式会社 ).

In 1960, motorcycle racing helmets began to be produced, and the Tokyo factory produced the first motorcycle helmets that met the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) .

In 1965, Honda had a series of Shoeis helmets produced as their original helmets, increasing their popularity and availability. The Shoei Safety Helmet Corp. was founded in 1968 shortly after the factory in Ibaraki was established. The current factory in Iwate was built in 1989. In May 1998 the name was changed to KK Shoei ( 株式会社 シ ヨ ウ エ イ ) and in August to KK Shoei.

Despite its success, Shoei remained a relatively small company with around 500 employees. The company supplies the helmets for numerous riders of the motorcycle world championship .

Shoei was one of the first manufacturers of lightweight helmets made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic in the mid-1970s . Shoei's GRV helmet was the first to use a mixture of carbon fiber and Kevlar .
