The island was first recorded on an Argentine map from 1952. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1960 after the British aircraft manufacturer Short Brothers , who in 1909 became the world's first commercial aircraft manufacturer thanks to an order from the Wright brothers .
