The Gauliga Nordthüringen was one of the top football leagues of the Association of Central German Ball Game Clubs (VMBV). It was founded in 1909 together with the Gauliga Ostthüringen as a split from the Gauliga Thuringia and existed until the VMBV was dissolved in 1933. The winner qualified for the finals of the Central German soccer championship .

overview

For the 1909/10 season , the district of Thuringia was divided into the districts of North Thuringia and East Thuringia, in which from then on the games for the Thuringian teams were organized. The Gauliga North Thuringia starts with six participating teams. In the following season, the teams were divided into two relays with five participants each, the two relay winners played the Gaume Championship in a final. This game mode was retained until the beginning of the First World War . In the summer of 1911, the clubs from Nordhausen , Sangerhausen , Eisleben and Helfta moved to the newly founded Gau Kyffhäuser . In mid-November 1913, the western part of the Northern Thuringia Gau was separated and assigned to the newly founded Gau Wartburg .

With the beginning of the First World War, gaming operations initially stalled. On October 14, 1914, the club representatives decided that association games should be canceled until further notice. In their place came Gauspiele without scoring. The Gotha and Mühlhausen clubs moved to the Gau Wartburg in 1915 . The other war seasons took place. In the seasons 1916/17 and 1917/18 the Gaumeister of Northern Thuringia was no longer qualified directly for the Central German football finals, but first played the Thuringian football championship against the champions of the other Thuringian Gauligen . Only this winner was allowed to take part in the Central German football final.

From the 1918/19 season onwards, the Gauliga North Thuringia was only second class. With the district league Thuringia , a new top division was created, which in addition to the Gau Nordthüringen also included the Gaue Kyffhäuser, East Thuringia, South Thuringia, Wartburg and West Thuringia. The VMBV then decided in 1919 to combine the remaining districts in the association area into district leagues. For the 1923/24 season , the district leagues were abolished again, the Gauliga Nordthüringen was again first class and was played with ten participants until it was dissolved.

In the course of the Gleichschaltung , the VMBV and consequently the Gauliga Nordthüringen were dissolved a few months after the National Socialists came to power in 1933. The Gaumeister and the runner-up of the 1932/33 season were given a starting place in the future first-class Gauliga middle , the other teams were placed in the lower divisions.

The Gauliga North Thuringia was dominated by the Erfurt clubs. By the time they were merged to form the Thuringia regional league , SC Erfurt won six of the eight championships played. In the 1920s, the playing strength of the remaining Erfurt clubs increased, so that in addition to SC Erfurt , SpVgg Erfurt and VfB Erfurt were able to secure the championship. SV 01 Gotha and SC Stadtilm were the only clubs outside of Erfurt to receive honors.

classification

The excessive number of first-class Gauligen within the VMBV had caused a dilution of the game level, there were sometimes double-digit results in the Central German football finals. The clubs from the Gauliga North Thuringia were initially among the stronger clubs in the association. The SC Erfurt could 1909/10 advance to the finals of the Central German football finals, however, the discharged on April 3, 1910 game lost to VfB Leipzig with 1: 4. The semi-finals of the finals were reached in each of the next two years. In the 1920s, however, the strength of the game decreased compared to the other Gaumeisters. The Gaumeister of North Thuringia often failed in the first or second round of the final round. The SpVgg Erfurt was able to advance again in the semifinals in 1929/30 , but lost it significantly with 0: 5 against the Dresdner SC .

In the first-class Gauliga Mitte , which was introduced in 1933, SpVgg Erfurt was able to hold out for eight years and SC Erfurt for seven years without achieving any notable success. Other clubs from the former Gauliga North Thuringia did not make the leap into the Gauliga Mitte until 1944.

bIn 1916/17 and 1917/18 the Gaumeister of Northern Thuringia first had to prevail in the Thuringian football championship against the other clubs from the Thuringian districts in order to take part in the central German football final. This was achieved by SC Erfurt in the 1916/17 season.

Eternal table

All traditional seasons of the first-class Gauliga North Thuringia up to 1933 are taken into account, including the final games between the relay champions between 1910/11 and 1913/14. Only the participating teams have survived from the 1909/10 season. Since there were two games in the 1912/13 season that were counted as defeats for both teams, there are more counterpoints than pluses.
