The district league of Thuringia was one of the top football leagues of the Association of Central German Ball Game Clubs (VMBV). It was launched in 1918 and lasted until 1923. The winner qualified for the finals of the Central German soccer championship .
overview
As early as the 1916/17 season , the champions of the Gauligen in Thuringia were no longer directly qualified for the Central German football championship, but first played the Thuringian football championship among themselves. Only this winner then took part in the Central German football final. In 1918/19 , a season earlier than the rest of the district leagues, the district league Thuringia was formed as the top division from the Gauen Kyffhäuser , Gauliga Northern Thuringia , Osterland , Eastern Thuringia , Wartburg and Western Thuringia . Originally the Saale-Elster district was also supposed to become part of the Thuringia district, but this successfully protested against the association's decision and remained independent in 1918/19. The district league started with eight participating teams (four from Northern Thuringia, two from Eastern Thuringia and two from Wartburg). For the 1919/20 season , the VMBV then merged the remaining districts in the association area to form further district leagues.
The reason for the amalgamation of several Gauligen to circular leagues is primarily to be found in the level of play that has been watered down by the numerous leagues. The VMBV wanted to increase the playing strength with the merger. However, this was particularly thwarted in the Gau Thuringia, as early as the 1921/22 season there were two seasons with seven teams each. In the following season four squadrons with a total of 26 teams were formed in the district league Thuringia, which is almost the same as before the district league was founded. The reason for this was the travel times and travel costs of the individual clubs, which had increased due to the amalgamation of several districts. For the 1923/24 season , the circular leagues were therefore abolished again, from then on the numerous Gauligen again formed the first divisions within it VMBVs.
Two-time district champions are SC Erfurt , who won the first two seasons. Local rivals SpVgg Erfurt reached the district championship in 1922. VfB 07 Coburg , coming from the southern Thuringian district, came to championship honors in 1921. The last played district championship was secured by SV 01 Gotha from the Gau Wartburg . In the Central German football finals, however, the district champions of Thuringia could not celebrate any success. The best place in the final round, which was held in the round-robin tournament from 1920 , was third place from SC Erfurt in the 1919/20 season .
