The VfB Erfurt was a German football club based in Erfurt , which existed 1904-1945.

society

VfB Erfurt was founded in 1904 as FC Britannia Erfurt . In the time of its existence it was often in the shadow of the two local rivals SC Erfurt 1895 and SpVgg Erfurt . From 1919 the now renamed VfB Erfurt club operated in the newly founded Thuringian regional league, the top division at the time. After the Thuringian league was abolished in 1923, the leagues of the Thuringian football district formed the top division; VfB Erfurt now played in the Gauliga North Thuringia and was Gaumeister in the 1927/28 season. In the associated qualification for the Central German Championship , the Thuringians prevailed against VfB Eisleben , but lost 2-0 to CBC 1899 in the round of 16 .

In the following period Erfurt no longer played first class. After the National Socialists seized power in 1933, all areas of sport were reorganized as part of the harmonization process. As the new top division, 16 Gauligen were created, which were divided into districts for the lower divisions and these in turn were divided into districts. Champion and runner-up in the 1932/33 season were assigned to the new district class of Thuringia in Gaues VI (center). With sixth place the team missed this goal and played in third class until the war-related cessation of the league game at the end of 1944. After the end of the war, in October 1945, all civil associations were banned and forcibly dissolved by the Control Council Act No. 2 .

When the formation of casual sports communities was allowed a little later, the VfB team joined forces with the representation of SC Erfurt in 1895 to form SG Erfurt-West .

In 1998 the tradition of the club was briefly revived when the football department of the lower class SV Optima Erfurt was renamed VfB Erfurt. After the merger with Grün-Weiß 90 Erfurt in 2001 , the association operates under the name VfB Grün-Weiß Erfurt .
