The Gauliga West Thuringia was one of the top football leagues of the Association of Central German Ball Game Clubs (VMBV). It was founded in 1910 and existed until the VMBV was dissolved in 1933. The winner qualified for the finals of the Central German soccer championship .

overview

In Thuringia, despite the already existing VMBV, further regional football associations were formed, including the Thuringian Ball Game Association from 1905 and the Thuringian Ball Game Association from 1909 . On December 18, 1910, the association of Thuringian Ball Game Clubs from 1909 was incorporated into the VMBV, and the newly created Gau West Thuringia was formed for the clubs. In the same year, the Association of Thuringian Ball Game Clubs from 1905 also joined the VMBV, and the clubs from this association were also sorted into the new Gau West Thuringia and formed the group north in this, whereas the clubs from the association from 1909 the group south formed. In the first season, therefore, the game took place in the two groups, but there was no play-off between the two group winners. Both group winners were therefore not yet qualified for the Central German soccer final. On May 21, 1911, it was decided to merge the two groups, so that for the 1911/12 season the Gau could be played on a single track with eight clubs.

With the beginning of the First World War , gaming operations across the association stalled in the 1914/15 season. On July 19, 1914, the associations discussed the amalgamation of the Gaue Südthüringen and Westthüringen, but did not yet come to an agreement. The decision was postponed to August 8, 1914. Due to the war, this association day did not take place anymore, the districts remained as before. Since the Gau West Thuringia played its association games in the spring-autumn rhythm, the first class was played from April 1914. With the outbreak of war, the association championship was canceled. The other war championships took place irregularly. Unlike other Gaumeisters, the winners of West Thuringia did not take part in the Central German football championship, which was introduced from 1916/17 onwards.

From the 1918/19 season , the Gauliga West Thuringia was only second class. With the district league Thuringia , a new top division was created, which in addition to the Gau West Thuringia also included the Gaue Kyffhäuser , North Thuringia , East Thuringia , South Thuringia and Wartburg . The VMBV then decided in 1919 to combine the remaining districts in the association area into district leagues. For the 1923/24 season , the district leagues were abolished again, the Gauliga West Thuringia was henceforth again first class and was initially played with eight teams. For the 1930/31 season , the number of participating teams in the Gauliga was increased to ten.

In the course of the Gleichschaltung , the VMBV and consequently the Gauliga West Thuringia were dissolved a few months after the National Socialists came to power in 1933. No club received a starting place for the first-class Gauliga Mitte , which was newly introduced from 1933 , the clubs were instead classified in the lower divisions of the new football district.

Several clubs were able to secure the Gaume Championship in West Thuringia. Up to the First World War, FC Preußen Suhl , FC Germania Mehlis and SC Meiningen 04 each won the championship once. In the 1920s, the clubs from the merged town of Zella-Mehlis initially dominated the Gauliga. The SC 1912 Zella-Mehlis won three times (once under the original name TV Zella ) and the FC 1905 Zella-Mehlis won the league once. Both clubs merged in 1929 to form SV Union Zella-Mehlis and were able to win the championship again in the first season as a fusion club. The SpVgg Zella-Mehlis 06 , also a fusion club from FC Germania Mehlis and VfL Mehlis in 1909 , came three times to championship honors. The military association SpVgg Gelb-Rot Meiningen , established in 1925, reached the championship in 1928/29 and 1932/33. Furthermore, the SC Wasungen was 1931/32 Gaumeister West Thuringia.

classification

The excessive number of first-class Gauligen within the VMBV had caused a dilution of the game level, there were sometimes double-digit results in the Central German football finals. The clubs from the Gauliga Westsachsen were among the weakest clubs in the association, although there were no double-digit defeats in Central German football finals. The biggest defeats were the 1: 9 bankruptcy of SC Meiningen against Coburg FC 1913/14 and the 1: 8 defeat of SC 1912 Zella-Mehlis against SpVgg Erfurt 1924/25 . In two seasons, the second round of the Central German football finals could be reached playfully (without receiving a bye ). 1927/28 won the 06 SpVgg cell-Mehlis against the SC 06 Oberlind 4: 3 by extension, but then failed in the 2nd round with 0: 5 at the FC Victoria Leipzig . With a 3-2 success in the replay against black and yellow Weißenfels , SC Wasungen was able to reach the second round of the game in 1931/32 . There, however, there was a 1: 5 defeat against 1. Vogtland FC Plauen .

In the first-class Gauliga Mitte , introduced from 1933 , no club from the Gau West Thuringia was considered. During the existence of this Gauliga no club from the former Gau West Thuringia managed to qualify for this first-class league.

Eternal table

All traditional seasons of the first-class Gauliga West Thuringia from 1911 to 1933 are taken into account. Since there was a game in the 1911/12 season that was rated as a defeat for both teams, there are more opposing points than positive points.
