The Gauliga Harz (also 1st class Harz ) was one of the top football leagues of the Association of Central German Ball Game Clubs (VMBV). It was launched in 1908 and existed until the VMBV was dissolved in 1933. The winner qualified for the finals of the Central German soccer championship .

overview

The Harzgau was founded on the efforts of SC Thale on September 12, 1908, the official work began on October 1, 1908. The Gau became an official member of the VMBV from March 8, 1909, whereupon the Gauliga Harz was launched as the top division. In the summer of 1917, the North Harz Turf Sports Association joined the Gau, the association was previously a department in the North German Football Association (10th district).

The 1st class Harz started with four participants. At the beginning of the First World War , a so-called Red Cross Round took place in 1914 instead of normal game operations . Since all teams had withdrawn during the season, this round was canceled. In the further years of the war, the game was continued with six teams in the Gauliga.

In the course of the game class reform of the VMBV in 1919, the Gauliga Harz was only second class. With the district league Elbe a new top division was created, which in addition to the Gau Harz also included the Gaue Altmark, Anhalt and Middle Elbe. This district league was dominated by the Magdeburg clubs, only Germania Halberstadt was able to hold out from the Harz region in the first division. The district leagues were abolished again in the 1923/24 season, from then on the Gauliga Harz was again first class until 1933. From 1929 the league was played with ten participants.

In the course of the Gleichschaltung, the VMBV and consequently the Gauliga Harz were dissolved a few months after the National Socialists came to power in 1933. No club from this Gau qualified for the newly established first-class Gauliga Mitte , instead the clubs were classified in the lower divisions.

The Gauliga Harz was dominated by FC Germania Halberstadt , which was able to secure the Gaumeist title 15 times. The very first tournament in the 1908/09 season , which was not yet organized by the VMBV, was won by FC Askania Aschersleben . The first championship within the VMBV won FK Hohenzollern Quedlinburg , but the Gaumeister Harz was not yet qualified for the finals this season. This was followed by three championships from Prussia Halberstadt before Germania Halberstadt was able to win the remaining championships until 1933.

classification

The excessive number of first-class Gauligen within the VMBV had caused a dilution of the game level, there were sometimes double-digit results in the Central German football finals. The clubs from the Gauliga Harz were among the weaker clubs in the association. The first round could only be survived five times, at the latest in the second round significant defeats followed (e.g. 1916/17 0:12 against FC Wacker Halle , 1925/26 1: 8 against Sportfreunde Halle , 1931 / 32 2: 8 against Dresdner SC ). Germania Halberstadt caused a surprise in the first round in 1931/32 when FV Fortuna Magdeburg , winner of the strong Gauliga Mittelelbe , was defeated 4-2.

No team from the Gauliga Harz qualified for the Gauliga Middle , which was introduced in 1933 . Until 1945, no club from the Harz Gau area had made it into this league.
