VfB Leipzig - Central German soccer champion 1918

The Central German Football Championship 1917/18 of the Association of Central German Ball Game Clubs was the 17th season of the Central German Football Championship . Despite the First World War , regular games took place in most of the districts during this season. With a 2-0 win over last year's winner Hallescher FC 1896 , VfB Leipzig became Central German football champions for the eighth time. The German soccer championship did not take place again due to the war.

mode

The clubs were divided into 22 districts (Gaue) in the 1917/18 season. The Gau Grafschaft-Mansfeld joined the Gau Kyffhäuser from this season. 15 districts reported their champions to the game committee on time and were allowed to take part in the Central German soccer final. As in the previous season, the winners of the districts of Kyffhäuser, North Thuringia, East Thuringia, Saale-Elster and Wartburg first played the Thuringian football championship. Only the winner from these five districts qualified for the Central German football final.

Gau Anhalt

The game 1. SC Zerbst against SV Bernburg was rated as a defeat for both clubs. At the end of the round, FC Cöthen 02 and SV 07 Bernburg were tied, so a play-off was called. This was won by Cöthen 3: 1. However, the match committee canceled the game due to a referee's error. Due to a deadline, however, FC Cöthen 02 was reported as Anhalt's representative at the Central German football final. SV Bernburg won the replay for first place in August 1918 .

Gau West Thuringia

The final table from the Gau has not been passed down, FC Germania Mehlis , TV 09 Mehlis , FC Zella 05 and last year's winner TV Zella took part, although the last two clubs were banned from playing. No representative from West Thuringia took part in this year's Central German football final.

Thuringian football championship

Again a separate championship was played this season in Thuringia, to which this time the Gaumeister of the five Thuringian Gaue Kyffhäuser, Northern Thuringia, Eastern Thuringia, Saale-Elster and Wartburg qualified. Only the winner of this championship qualified for the Central German football final.

In July 1918 it was decided to merge the Thuringian Gaue Kyffhäuser, Northern Thuringia, Eastern Thuringia, Saale-Elster, Southern Thuringia, Wartburg and Western Thuringia into a circle, a top Thuringian league should be established. The extent to which all affected districts participated could not be recorded. At least the Saale-Elster-Gau protested against the decision and played their own first class in the coming season.

Riemann from Halle had the first chance in the game, but the Leipzig defense put the ball out of danger. In the 4th minute, the Leipzig came to their first opportunity to score, but failed to Hensel. In the 11th minute, Baurittel prevailed and crossed into the penalty area, the Halle defender Speyer missed the cross, so that Krug could easily head in to make it 1-0 for Leipzig. Then Halle pressed for the equalization, but Burghardt and Förderer gave several options. In the 23rd minute, Pömpner shoots at Halle's goal on the other side, but Hensel prevented another hit. Shortly before the end of the first half, Burghardt shoots past Leipzig's empty goal. After the break, Speyer and Burghardt von Halle swapped positions. Krug took advantage of a mistake by Burghardt in the 52nd minute and scored to make it 2-0. Halle then switched again, but the other chances were blocked by the Leipzig defense and goalkeeper Frick. The VfB Leipzig was thus possible for the eighth time medium German football champions.
