The Elbe district league was one of the top football leagues of the Association of Central German Ball Game Clubs (VMBV). It was launched in 1919 as part of a division reform by the VMBV and existed until 1923. The winner qualified for the finals of the Central German football championship .
overview
In 1919, the VMBV decided to introduce so-called Kreisligen over the existing Gauligen as the first game classes, which included several Gaue. Previously, the number of first-class leagues had already risen to over 20 in some cases, which caused the level of play in the Central German soccer finals to be diluted. The district league Elbe included the Gaue Altmark , Anhalt , Harz and Middle Elbe and was played with ten participants. For the 1923/24 season, the district leagues were abolished again, from then on the numerous Gauligen again formed the first divisions within VMBVs.
The district league Elbe was dominated by the Magdeburg clubs from the Gau Middle Elbe, which made up all district championships among themselves. Still, no club managed to win the league more than once. The clubs FuCC Cricket-Viktoria Magdeburg and Magdeburg FC Viktoria 1896 , which still dominate the Gauliga Mittelelbe, could not win the district championship. In the Central German football finals, however, the district champions Elbes were among the weaker clubs compared to the other district champions. In the finals, which were held as a round-robin tournament from 1920 to 1922 , the Elbe clubs were twice last and once penultimate. In the final round of 1922/23 , which was held as a knockout round , at least the semi-finals could be reached with a 2-1 victory over Borussia Halle .
