The Gauliga Saale-Elster (also 1st class Saale-Elster ) was one of the top football leagues of the Association of Central German Ball Game Clubs (VMBV). It was founded in 1912 and existed until the VMBV was dissolved in 1933. The winner qualified for the finals of the Central German soccer championship . The association area roughly corresponds to today's eastern part of the Burgenland district .

overview

The founding under the name Gau Saale-Unstrut took place on June 11, 1912. The Gau foundation was based on the request of the Weißenfels associations, which did not find their interests in the Gau Saale sufficiently taken into account. Due to the small distance between the towns and the resulting reduced travel connections, the clubs from Teuchern , Naumburg and Zeitz were also included in the new Gau. The intention to also join the city of Merseburg failed because the travel connections in the Saalegau were more convenient and cheaper for Merseburg clubs. The clubs previously played in the 1st class in East Thuringia, in the 2nd class in Saale and in the 3rd class in Northwest Saxony. The Gau was renamed Saale-Elster during the first season, the top division started with five clubs.

With the beginning of the First World War, gaming operations initially stalled. In February 1915, a championship began in the Saale district. However, this was canceled again at the end of February 1915. In July 1915, a second attempt was made to host a championship, but it is not known whether this round was played to the end. The other war seasons took place normally. In the seasons 1916/17 and 1917/18 , the Gaumeister Saale-Elsters was no longer directly qualified for the Central German football final, but first played the Thuringian football championship against the champions of the other Thuringian Gauligen . Only this winner was allowed to take part in the Central German football final. In July 1918 it was decided to merge the Thuringian Gaue Kyffhäuser , Northern Thuringia , Eastern Thuringia , Saale-Elster, Southern Thuringia , Wartburg and Western Thuringia into a circle, a top Thuringian league should be established. The Saale-Elster-Gau protested against the decision and therefore played its own first class in the 1918/19 season .

In the course of the game class reform of the VMBV in 1919, the Gauliga Saale was only second class. With the district league Saale , a new top division was created, which in addition to the Gau Saale-Elster also included the Gau Saale and was dominated by the Halle clubs. For the 1923/24 season , the district leagues were abolished, the Gauliga Saale-Elster was henceforth again first class and was initially played with eight participants. For the 1926/27 season the number of participants was increased to ten and stayed that way until 1933.

In the course of the Gleichschaltung , the VMBV and consequently the Gauliga Saale-Elster were dissolved a few months after the National Socialists came to power in 1933. No club received a starting place for the first-class Gauliga Mitte , which was newly introduced from 1933 , the clubs were instead classified in the lower divisions of the new football district.

The Gauliga Saale-Elster was dominated by the Weißenfels and Naumburg clubs. Record champion with seven championships is the Naumburger SV 05 , who fought for the championship with the four-time Gaumeister Schwarz-Gelb Weißenfels at the end of the 1920s and the beginning of 1930 . The two Weißenfels clubs Prussia and TV Lion also won championship honors. Both clubs merged in 1920 to form TuRV 1861 Weißenfels and were able to win two more Gaume championships together.

classification

The excessive number of first-class Gauligen within the VMBV had caused a dilution of the game level, there were sometimes double-digit results in the Central German football finals. The clubs from the Gauliga Saale-Elster were among the weaker clubs in the association, although there were mostly no major defeats against stronger clubs. The greatest success for a club from the Saale-Elster-Gau in the Central German football finals was the reaching of the semi-finals in the 1923/24 season by Naumburger SV 05 . After victories over VfB Eisleben (2: 1), 1. SV Jena (2: 1) and SC 06 Oberlind (3: 2 afterwards), the Naumburg team only failed with 1: 3 at FC Wacker Halle . 1926/27 was black and yellow Weissenfels , however, reach the third round, failed in this clearly with 0: 6 on Chemnitzer BC . In all other final rounds played, the Gaumeister Saale-Elsters were eliminated in the first or second round.

Even in the first-class Gauliga Mitte , introduced from 1933 , no club from the former Saale-Elster district was able to celebrate successes. SpVgg Zeitz was the only club from this district to make the leap into the newly created first division from 1910 to 1944.

bIn 1916/17 and 1917/18 the Gaumeister Saale-Elsters first had to prevail in the Thuringian football championship against the other clubs from the Thuringian districts in order to take part in the central German football final. This failed in both seasons of the Gaumeisters Saale-Elsters.

Eternal table

All recorded seasons of the first-class Gauliga Saale-Elster from 1912 to 1933 are taken into account. The 1918/19 season is not recorded. Since there was a game in the 1916/17 season that was counted as a defeat for both teams, there are more counterpoints than pluses.
