Shrewsbury Castle

Shrewsbury Castle is a made of red sandstone built castle in the English town of Shrewsbury . It was built shortly after the Normans invaded in 1070, on behalf of Roger de Montgomery . However, it received its current appearance in the 13th century . During Richard Marshal's rebellion against King Henry III. The castle was besieged in January 1234 by Marshal and the Welsh prince Llywelyn from Iorwerth , until Marshal broke off the siege and the fighting continued in Ireland, where he died in April 1234.

The castle is located on a hill above the old town, in a loop of the River Severn . It was built as a fortification for the city to protect the flank not limited by the river. The former city walls started from the castle and spanned the city.

The castle is now owned by the Shropshire Unitary Authority . This is where the Shropshire Regiment Museum is located .
