Shuichi Abe ( Japanese 阿 部 守 一 , Abe Shuichi ; born December 21, 1960 in Kunitachi , Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese politician and has been the governor of Nagano Prefecture since 2010 .

Career

Abe is a graduate of the University of Tokyo and after completing his studies became a civil servant in the "Ministry of Self-Government" , for which he worked in several prefectural administrations and at the State Land Authority . From 2001 to 2004 he was Lieutenant Governor of Nagano under Yasuo Tanaka . In 2007 Abe finally left the ministry and was Vice Mayor of Yokohama City under Hiroshi Nakada . After the change of government in Tokyo in 2009, he worked for the newly created "Conference on the Renewal of Administration" .

In 2010 Abe ran to succeed Jin Murai as governor of Nagano. With the support of the Democratic Party , Social Democratic Party and New People's Party , he was able to win the elections on August 8, 2010 by around 5,000 votes ahead of the LDP-supported Yoshimasa Koshihara, who was Lieutenant Governor under Murai until July. During the election campaign Abe had announced that he wanted to introduce the hearings for the budget review of the “Conference on the Renewal of Administration” at the prefectural level. Abe took over the governorship on September 1, 2010.

In 2014 Abe was confirmed for a second term with non-communist all-party support by a four-fifths majority.
