from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shurhozelie Liezietsu , also Shürhozelie Liezietsu (born November 20, 1936 in Kohima , then British India , now Nagaland , India ), is a politician in the Indian state of Nagaland. From February 22, 2017 to July 19, 2017, he was Chief Minister of Nagaland .

biography

Shurhozelie Liezietsu was born in what was then the Naga Hills District in British India. He belongs to the Angami tribe, one of the 16 main tribes of the Naga people . He first attended the public mission school in his birthplace, graduated from Kohima Government High School in Kohima and then attended St. Edmund's College , in Shillong , the then capital of Assam . After a short period in state administration, he worked as a teacher. From 1969 he was politically active, and was one of the founders of the United Democratic Front , a regional party in Nagaland. He later served in the Naga National Democratic Party (NNDP). In 2002 Liezietsu was one of the founders of the Nagaland Peoples Front (NPF).

In the elections to the Nagaland regional parliament in 1974, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1993, 2003 and 2008, Liezietsu won constituency 10-Northern Angami-I . In the 2013 election he decided not to run again in this constituency. Instead, his son Khriehu Liezietsu ran, who was also successful there. Shurhozelie Liezietsu held several government offices in Nagaland.

After the incumbent Chief Minister TR Zeliang resigned in local elections due to protests against the 33% quota for women he had introduced, Liezietsu was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Nagaland on February 22, 2017. Due to his age of 81, political observers expected that he would not stay in office for long, but would hand over the office to a younger man before the next elections in Nagaland, which should take place at the latest in 2018. Liezietsu's term of office actually came to an end on July 19, 2017, when TR Zeliang, who had staged an intra-party revolt against his successor, was reappointed Chief Minister by the governor of Nagaland.

Personal

Liezietsu is married and has four sons. In addition to his political activities, he has also appeared as a writer in his native Angami and has published around 40 books on various topics (poetry, drama, translations, etc.).
