Kohima is the capital of the Indian state of Nagaland . It is a market town and has a population of around 100,000 (2011 census).
During World War II , the advance of the Japanese and the Indian National Army led by Subhash Chandra Bose was stopped in the battles at Kohima (April 4 to June 22, 1944) and Imphal . Today a large war cemetery commemorates this. Every year in December, the five-day Hornbill Festival takes place near the city, where the culture of the Naga tribes is presented and their dancers perform.
Since 2005, Kohima has had the status of a Municipal Council as a city .
