The Sitchuankauz ( Strix davidi ), also spelled Sichuan Owl , is a species from the family of real owls (Strigidae). It occurs exclusively in East Asia.

features

With a body size of about 58 centimeters, the Sitchuan Owl is a large species within its genus. Feather ears are missing. The face veil is pale and shows concentric dark lines in single individuals. The head and back are dull brownish with whitish and darker spots. However, the dark spots are usually not very noticeable on the dark plumage. The underside of the body is gray-white with noticeable dark vertical stripes. The beak is pale yellow. The legs and toes are completely feathered.

It can be confused with the Ural Owl . Unlike the Ural Owl, the Sitchuan Owl does not have any horizontal stripes on its tail feathers. There are certain similarities with the tawny owl , but it is much smaller.

Distribution area and habitat

The distribution area of the Sitchuan owl is limited to mountain ranges in the province of Sichuan . It occurs there at altitudes between 2,700 and 4,200 meters above sea level. It is a resident bird that inhabits old coniferous and mixed forests.

Way of life

The Sitchuan owl's way of life has not been studied in great detail. Presumably it resembles the Ural Owl in many ways. The food spectrum consists mainly of small mammals. It breeds in tree hollows and in abandoned nests of larger bird species. The clutch consists of two to three eggs that are only incubated by the female.
