The common broad- fronted bladder-head fly ( Sicus ferrugineus ) is a species from the family of the bladder-head flies (Conopidae).
features
The flies reach a body length of 8.5 to 9.5 millimeters. Their body is rust-red in color, the face is yellow, the forehead and crown are blunt, the underside of the face is shiny. The ocelle stain on the top of the relatively large head is dark brown. The short antennae are brown, their second link is as long as or longer than the third. The two-part trunk is dark brown to black. There is a shiny black spot between the hips ( coxa ) of the front and middle pairs of legs. The legs and the last segments of the abdomen are often darkened. The abdomen is round in cross-section, the seventh segment is elongated and conical. Especially in the male, the abdomen is curved at the end like a hook. The wings are transparent, but colored red-yellow at the base.
Occurrence and way of life
The animals are common in Asia , Europe and North Africa . The species is the most common of the family in Central Europe and can be found in all habitats from May to September. The adults are flower visitors, the larvae develop parasitically on bumblebees .
