Services

Stimming was mainly active in the field of textual criticism , syntax and literature of the Middle Ages .

After his dissertation had dealt with the life and work of François Villons, Stimming turned to Provencal literature, which remained his real research area for over two decades. In 1873 he published the songs Jaufré Rudels and in 1879 the songs Bertrans de Born . With his book Girart by Rossillon in 1888, Stimming made an important contribution to the history of this linguistic monument, as well as to the question of the origin of the heroic epics in general. His history of Provencal literature , which appeared in 1897, can be regarded as a kind of conclusion to his Provencal work .

After that, Stimming shifted the focus of his scientific work to the old French area. All of his subsequent major publications were text editions. First the Anglo- Norman Boeve de Haumtone appeared in 1899 , followed by the motet of the Bamberg song manuscript (1906) and finally, the last and most extensive work, his five-volume edition of the three continental versions of the Bueve de Hantone (1911–1920).

Tuning's smaller works, mostly published in magazines, dealt mainly with historical syntax, occasionally also with phonological questions.
