Sid Spindler
Siegfried Emil "Sid" Spindler (born July 9, 1932 in Łódź , † March 1, 2008 in Melbourne ) was an Australian politician ( Democrat ).
Life
Sid Spindler was born in Poland to German parents . In 1949, at the age of 17, he emigrated to Australia. There he founded a painting and decoration company and was able to obtain a law degree. From 1981 to 1986 he worked as an advisor to the politician Don Chipp and was elected to the Australian Senate in 1990.
Spindler was a member of the Senate from 1990 to 1996. During his time as a member of parliament, he was a strong advocate for the rights of Aborigines , immigrants, prison inmates and same-sex couples. He also campaigned against child labor. His membership in the Senate was also shaped by two scandals. In 1991, Janet Powell had to resign from the leadership of the Democratic Party after an affair between her and Spindler became known. In 1996 Jeff Kennett called on Spindler to apologize for his youthful membership in the Hitler Youth .
In 2002 he set up a foundation to support Aboriginal children with their studies.
He died of liver cancer in 2008 .
