Seven types
As seven species ( Hebrew שבעת המינים shiv'at ha-minim ) seven plants are called which are named by the Hebrew Bible as characteristic of the land of Israel ( Dtn 8,7a.8 EU ): "The LORD your God leads you into a good land ... a land in which wheat , barley , grapevines , fig trees and pomegranates grow; a land in which there are olive trees and [date] honey ”.
The first fruits ( Bikkurim ) of the new harvest of each of these seven species were brought to the Jerusalem Temple in the period from the Feast of Weeks ( Shavuot ) to the Feast of Tabernacles ( Sukkot ). This commandment is explained in Deut. 26.1–11 LUT . It can no longer be obeyed after the temple was destroyed.
The seven types of fruit have a special place in Jewish tradition and art. For example, they are shown as decorations on religious objects.
